I seek to process, honor, and preserve, through the labor of creation.

Artist Bio

CAITO (Caito Stewart) was born in 1985 in Ossining, New York. She has shown her work in Tokyo, Japan; St. Louis, MO; Brooklyn, and the greater New York area.

In early 2008, she moved to Tokyo, where she spent about ten years teaching, painting, studying Japanese, and traveling. On her travels she explored and documented the ruins and ghost towns around rural Japan.

Artist Statement

I make sculptures of everyday objects that have personal significance to me: bananas, bricks, sometimes a door knob.

Some objects I cast in transparent resin, bestowing them with an ephemeral quality. Others I hand-build in clay or cast in plaster, and then individually paint them to look real.

Through these processes, I explore the relationship between objects and memory. I memorialize, preserve, and suspend the destruction or decay of these objects. Yet, at the same time, I also exert my control over them, removing their functions and leaving them powerless. I organize them, create boundaries, and contain them in boxes.

These slight alterations I make to the objects contribute to their uncanny nature. They mimic the nature of dreams and memories in the way that they seem so real, but are actually fiction. My own brain makes changes to reality as it tries to process and understand my past.
